Mangave 'Painted Desert' PP31630

MAD ABOUT MANGAVE® Collection

Common Name: Mangave

The Painted Desert in the Southwest United States earned its name from explorers who marveled at the brilliant and varied colors of red, green, and even lavender. Like its namesake, 'Painted Desert' has an array of colors. Olive green leaves have a distinct lighter central band that is covered in red dots if exposed to UV light. Overall, the leaves have a dusty burgundy wash. The habit is upright, perfect for underplanting in containers. Compared to 'Blazing Saddles', this succulent has a more upright habit and a sharper distinction between margin and center colors.

Mangave is a relatively new phenomenon, an intergeneric cross of Manfreda x Agave. These rare hybrids combine the best of both worlds: the better growth rate and the interesting patterns of Manfreda, and the habit and refinement of Agave. We are very excited (shall we say mad?) about our new hybrids from Walters Gardens hybridizing.

Growers will appreciate the fast growth rate of Mangave-these hybrids finish more quickly than Agave, thanks to their Manfreda parentage. Look to the future for more interesting and unique looks to join the collection!
