Stipa calamagrostis

Common Name: Pheasant Tail Grass, Silver Spike Grass, Ornamental Grass

One of the most graceful, free-flowering, early blooming ornamental grasses, and hardy to boot!

This grass forms a densely rounded, refined clump of narrow, green leaves which are semi-evergreen in milder climates.  In early summer, gracefully arching tassels of silvery green flowers cascade like a waterfall from the center of the clump.  Rain tends to weigh the flower plumes down, but they bounce right back up when they dry out.  As they age, the seed heads become fluffy and tawny colored, persisting into winter.

Pheasant Tail Grass has a beautiful naturalistic style about it and is effective as a focal point or planted in drifts.
